Gen. Jack Keane Gives His Take On US, Taliban Truce Agreement

4 star General & chairman of the institute for the study of war, Jack Keane, was on Fox News today talking about the “Temporary” truce between the US and the Taliban. This has been the Longest War in US history that has seen thousands dead and no clear victory. Is peace really even possible? Or at least an end to war? Can this truce stand or will the Taliban break their word? How can we trust these terrorists to keep their word?

“This is not a ‘cease fire‘ he said, “but a reduction in violence.” The leaders of the Taliban, “cannot really control their hard core fighters, they will continue to fight.” This reudction is only for a single week but chances are high that there “will be a reduction anyway,” he said, because “This is the dead of winter and so they are prepairing for a spring time offensive.”

General Keane said that if the United States really wanted to put some presure on the Taliban we would make it a Month not just a week. The Taliban doesn’t want that because “A lot of their fighters are weary, and if they went home for the winter for an entire month, they may not return t the battlefield after.” If the reduction in violence does hold, it could force the taliban leaders to sit down and negotiate for peace.

This has been an almost 18 year war now, the longst in our history. It is time to bring our soldiers home. However, we don’t want to just pull our troops from the region, and leave a power vacume like the one that created ISIS. The US will begin to withdraw some soldures and in return we have asked the taliban to publicly denounce its support for terrorism and Al Qaeda spacifically. Which General Keane says we shouldn’t believe a word of, because they will always support terrorism and they never keep their word.

We cannot trust the Taliban.

In my opinion if you are going to go to war…you need to go, bringing your entire force to bear down upon the enemy in a decisive victory…and then… get the hell out.

If you go in with half measures and without a plan to win and get back out, then you just end up with a 20 year war, with no clear winners that never ever ends.
