Matt Geatz (R), Luis Gohmert (R) & Other Lawmakers, Forced To Self Quarantine After Coronavirus Contact
Rep. Matt Gaetz, while he was abroad Air Force One with The President, was told that he had come in contact with a person who tested positive for coronavirus. He reportedly self quarantined himself in a seperate room of the aircraft.
Geatz, a Republican Congressman from Florida, was exposed to the virus during his time at the Conservative Political Action Conference. So was Congressman Luis Gohmert, Senetor Ted Cruz, Representitive Paul Gosar, and Representitive Doug Collins of Georgia, All of them have closed their offices and are self-quarantining themselves despite not experiencing symptoms.
Gaetz’s office said in a statement:
While the Congressman is not experiencing symptoms, he received testing today and expects results soon. Under doctor’s usual precautionary recommendations, he’ll remain self-quarantined until the 14-day period expires this week.
Gaetz learned of the news after he had joined the president on Air Force One Monday after a campaign fundraiser. The congressman was then placed in a sequestered area of the plane and said he would de-board after everyone else, according to the Wall Street Journal.
“The physicians aboard AF1 were very clear with me that the risk that I transmitted this virus was very low,” Gaetz told the outlet.
The WSJ said that, a White House aide summoned Gaetz because the president wanted to see him. Geatz reportedly did not go into Trump’s office aboard the plane, however the president “used his good-heartedness and good humor to bring me some comfort and make sure I was fine,” according to congressman Gaetz.
“He joked that maybe I needed to be wrapped in cellophane. I said that I volunteered several times to jump out of Air Force One without a parachute,” he said.
Despite Trump’s contact with both Gaetz on Air Force One and Collins at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Georgia last week, the president hasn’t been tested for coronavirus. Vice President Mike Pence, who is heading up the coronavirus response, hasn’t been tested either. Both attended CPAC as well.
“The President has not received COVID-19 testing because he has neither had prolonged close contact with any known confirmed COVID-19 patients, nor does he have any symptoms,”
White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement Monday.
“President Trump remains in excellent health, and his physician will continue to closely monitor him.”
Here is what the office of Congressman Matt Geatz said on Twitter Yesterday:
Luis Gohmert’s office also released a statement:
It wasn’t only Republicans from CPAC who have been exposed and have decided to self quarentine, Rep. Julia Brownley (D-CA) said that she will self-quarantine after coming in contact with someone who had tested positive for coronavirus:
Yesterday, I was informed that an individual I met with last week in DC tested positive for COVID-19. I am told that individual is self-quarantining and has informed local public health officials.“I consulted with the Office of Attending Physician, the CDC, Ventura County Public Health, and a personal physician experienced in infectious diseases, all of whom said that the risk of exposure to me and my staff is considered very low. However, given the significant number of constituents and other individuals that my staff and I normally have contact with each day when Congress is in session, I have decided to close our DC office for the week. My staff and I are working remotely to continue to serve the residents of Ventura County, and my district offices in Thousand Oaks and Oxnard remain open.
Julia Brownly (D-CA)
She added, “Out of an abundance of absolute caution, my DC staff and I are self-monitoring and maintaining social distancing practices. Neither I, nor my staff, are experiencing any symptoms at this time,”
Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) also announced that he had come into contact with coronavirus at CPAC two weeks ago. He said:
This afternoon, I was notified by CPAC that they discovered a photo of myself and the patient who has tested positive for coronavirus. While I feel completely healthy and I am not experiencing any symptoms, I have decided to self-quarantine out of an abundance of caution. I will follow the recommendations of the House Physician and my office will provide updates as appropriate.
Representitive Doug Collins (R-GA)
Senetor Ted Cruz and other law makers have also said they have decided to self quarantine after being at CPAC 2 weeks ago. At this time none of the Government officials have reported any signs or symptoms of the deadly disease.
