Tomorrow on 11/11/2019, about this time of the day (5:30am), most of you will awake and begin your day. It is a special day but has not been for most. There are about 18.8 million veterans (7.6% of the population, 2017 #’s ) living today. Years have gone by since you thought of it as extraordinary.

For that small percentage of Americans, it is a mixed feeling day. It reminds them of that wonderful day when they signed their name to a sheet of paper, and the pride that welled up in their hearts and souls when they laid that signature down. It’s a time to remember, as that aircraft lifted off for their first deployment, the feeling of pride to serve, the excitement to be going, the apprehensiveness of what lay ahead.

There was the flight home, the tears of sadness, the concern that there was never going to be any way to rationalize your existence, when there were those left behind, or who had come back too soon on a different flight, in boxes or those damn bags. The tears turned for that moment or two, as joy and the sense of love of country, even deep patriotic emotion, as that big ole jet airliner ramped up it’s nose on final approach at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

For this day, those of you in the 99% who are not serving or have no plans to do so, there is still a requirement, which left unanswered, carves away or depletes the understanding of the enormity of sacrifice carried out on your behalf. There are many options to fulfilling your requirement, to repay that sacrifice.

As a member who wore the uniform, I do not expect any return and while I did serve, I owe the same debt as those who did not. Service does not preclude honor. I hope today, I’ve given you enough time to help me put forth some things to do and learn so that you may better honor those who did their duty, and in that, helped create a better, safer, and more comfortable place to live.

Here are several organizations to support and suggestions for greater understanding: ???❤???

Enjoy this day to come, eat and play, but remember and find a way to serve or honor those whom have done so for you.
