A Well-Balanced Media Part 2 of 5
This is part two of a five part series. In the first part we showed that there were five parts to journalism and the initial part of this series talked about truth and accuracy. If you wish to go back and read the first article then you can read it here:
Now we’ll look at another aspect of a well-balanced media.
Independence
“There are always three sides to every story.”
As mentioned by the author of the video “…you are not there to be a spokesman.” Journalism is about covering facts, not sides. It is to show, by neutral tone, a presentation of information about events. It is not to deliberately pick a side and ignore the rest.
Representing only one side ignores the rest of the story and misinforms the general public about the big picture. Case in point: during the 2016 Presidential election, the general forms of journalism ignored any information about Trump’s growing campaign. This lead to a general consensus that Hillary would win.
Many were left disillusioned when Hillary lost since they all believed that there was no way Trump could win. Many screamed how unfair the election was. In actuality if coverage of Trump would have been shown then the general public would have known that it was going to be a close election.
In another example there was a video report about the lack of crime near the border in regards to illegal immigration. The video was filmed in an area that was already secured by border security. What this video failed to do was also do a report in an area where there was little to no border security. Have a look at these two videos.
In 2015 the media covered Hillary Clinton’s campaign while almost ignoring Bernie Sanders. This pushed Sanders to the back burner costing him the democratic primary. In other words, media coverage completely influenced the outcome of the 2016 election races. Here the story:
“He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past.”
Another aspect of only covering one side is the fact that information from the side not reported on is lost over time. History is written by the victor and it is written to cast a favorable light upon the situation, even if the situation had many unfavorable situations.
Christopher Columbus was thought to be heroic until repressed information came out:
History is full of one sided stories that don’t include the full picture because those that reported the news failed to see beyond their favored agenda.
“It is the absolute right of the State to supervise the formation of public opinion.” Joseph Goebbels
One sided journalism is always set to further a political agenda, whether if it’s by choice or not. There are many countries where journalism is controlled by the state to ensure that the government is shown favorably and that the full story isn’t broadcasted to the public. China, North Korea, and other communist countries ensure that journalism is only one sided.
Suppressing knowledge only ensures that the general public remains ignorant and suppresses the individual’s freedom to make a choice based on all of the facts.
It is journalism’s right and duty to ensure that all facts are presented in an equal and well balanced fashion in order to combat ignorance, manipulation, and oppression.
